Way Cool Fanny Pack for Assistant Stylists

As an assistant stylist, you don’t really need the mack daddy of styling kits — your key stylist will have that on hand — but what you do need is a little kit. The little kit only needs a few essentials like a travel sewing kit, safety pins, small scissors, etc … BUT you do need something to keep everything in, right? A good option is a fanny pack. It moves with you and if you take our advice, they don’t have to be completely lame.

Check out this one from Patricia Field. Its only $26 and comes in a TON of options.

Alexander McQueen on Melrose

Another Day 2 School of Style hot spot is the Alexander McQueen boutique on Melrose. If you want to see beautifully made pieces with an edge, then you need to stop by.  Some of our favorites: The velvet scarf gown dress (the dress that Luke is posing with), the black knit cardigan with the big collar, and of course the skull clutches (how could you not love those?)

Stylist Hot Spot: Whatever Lola Wants

During Day 2 of The School of Style we make a ton of stops; cool stores in LA, showrooms, vintage stores, costume house, and more.  One of the stops that we make is to Whatever Lola Wants on La Brea. Not go choosing favorites or anything, but … we had a lot of fun in this hot little boutique.

Whatever Lola wants has great swimwear, lingerie, and a ton of cool accessories. We all fell in love with the bright yellow patent leather Mary Janes, and this amazing little white bracelet that looks like cake frosting.

A Stylist’s Supply Headquarters

Remember last week when we talked about of the essentials that a stylist needs in their kit? Well we took a stop over to Western Costume Company (the ultimate place for stylist supplies) during yesterday’s Day 2 School of Style class to stock up on the essentials.

Check us out having fun with supplies …

Luke "schooling" his students on stylist supplies

We picked up some of the basics like: binder clips (for making quick alterations to clothing), a fresh new prop bag, tags, a hand steamer, safety pins, and garment bags. It took a lot of willpower, but we managed to keep the jug of fake blood on the shelf at the supply store … maybe next visit.

Styling 101: How to actually lose money @ work.

Awe yes, sometimes we stylists need a gentle nudge to remind us of our humble beginnings. I well remember the days of assisting evil stylists who made me tape up the shoes we had borrowed for shoots. I would tape them poorly, and as a result whatever surface the model was walking on would eventually burn through, thus ruining the shoes. Back in the day this was fairly common, and I would always dread having to go report to the the key stylist that my tape up job had failed. I would usually get a good round of verbal abuse, then i would  follow that with an earnest ” sow-wee, it will never happen again”. The good thing about assisting is that when you waste money by mistake, it doesn’t  come out of your pocket (unless you happen to work for a satanic bitch of a stylist). Anyway last week my crew and I had a shoot with a the lovely actress Jayma Mays, and these fine shoes by Report didn’t survive the tape job. Oh well, at least I got to spend my money at Diavolina, one of my favorite stores. Too bad I’m not a size 8 drag queen:)

School of Style Day 2- Jeremy Scott

One of our many stops on Day 2 of The School of Style is visiting PR firms. We visited a little (okay, not so little at all) PR firm that you all may of heard of called People’s Revolution.  Well, we couldn’t leave without checking out some of the awesome pieces from Jeremy Scott.

Jeremy Scott makes some of the most fun and unique pieces that you will ever lay eyes on. I mean, look how awesome …
