SOS Grad, Laurie Brucker on KTLA News

We just love it when our graduates become forces to be reckoned with in the fashion world!

We actually interviewed Laurie Brucker not too long ago here on the School Of Style blog. Laurie graduated from School Of Style two years ago. She walked into our classes with some experience under her belt but wanted to learn as much as she could about styling in Los Angeles.  Well she must have learned something because we saw Laurie on KTLA Morning News the other day!

Yep, Laurie was on KTLA lending her “Glee” styling expertise to the people of Los Angeles. Watch the video below to see Laurie’s “Glee” inspired fashion show.

Visit Our New Page: Graduate Success Stories

We have a brand new page on School Of Style called Graduate Success Stories. On this page we highlight the success of some of our graduates. When our students apply the information they learn during our classes, they almost always find work.

Our graduates have gone on to work with some of the most well-respected stylists in the industry including; B Akerlund, Linday Zir, Monica Rose, Carol Beadle, Estee StanleyJessica Pastor and many more. That means our students get to work with some of Hollywood’s brightest stars like Britney Spears, Kanye West, The Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry, Fergie, Elle Fanning, Matt Damon, and so many more.

Pretty amazing isn’t it? Take a look at the page to see some of our amazing success stories.

SOS Grad, Giorgia Tramontano on Closet Visit

Earlier this week we discovered the site Closet Visit. Closet Visit is a site that goes in to California girl’s closets. We were happy to see that one of our grads was featured on the site! Giorgia Tramontano graduated from School Of Style one year ago and is now a full-time stylist. Giorgia followed the job leads that we sent to our graduates, worked really hard, and the rest is history.

Read our interview with her here and take a look at some of the pictures from home and closet.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (Part 2)

As promised, we’ve got more pictures from the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit at The Met.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (Part 1)

While we were in NYC for Class 1 and 2, we just had to stop at the Met before heading back to Los Angeles. Why? The Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit, that’s why. We bypassed the 2-hour long line by purchasing a Met membership (best $60 we ever spent) and got a chance to see the most amazing fashion/ art exhibit ever (EVER!!) before hopping on our plane. Alexander McQueen was a genius. Seeing the clothing in person was absolutely mind-blowing. The details, the magic … ugh! So insane. There aren’t words to describe it so let’s have the pictures do the talking.

We actually didn’t get pictures of entire exhibit because as it turns out, you can’t take pictures. Even though we only snapped our way through a quarter of the exhibit before getting busted, we still managed to get a ton of pics. So here are a few to wet your whistle. More to come later …

Know Your Shoes!

We were digging around online and found this handy/adorable shoe sheet and just had to share it with all of you. If you are going to work as a stylist … you’d better know your shoes. After all, shoes do make the outfit a lot of the time.

Top 5 iPhone Apps for Stylists

It’s the great phone debate, which is better– the iPhone or the Blackberry? We can’t say for sure which is better but each certainly comes with it’s own set of pros and cons. Blackberry is great for making calls, however everything else it at Atari level. The iPhone has incredible apps, is super-sophisticated and sexy but it’s not so sexy when it comes to making phone calls.

So which is better? We still don’t know, but we do know this … There are some great apps for the iPhone that come in really handy when you are working as a stylist or an assistant stylist.

1.) Style.com- Find out what’s happening on the runways, what’s in style right now, and get inspired with this free iPhone app.  Another awesome bonus … you can use this app to help make your sample requests when you aren’t at your desk.

2.) FedEx, UPS, and USPS- As a stylist you are constantly stressing out over a package. Where is it? When is it coming? Find out fast with these super-handy apps.

3.) Moleskine- Who doesn’t love a Moleskine notebook? We sure do but we can’t always handle carrying one around when we’re out shopping. Use this amazing app to help keep all of your styling notes handy. You’ll never have to worry about leaving that crumpled up sheet of paper with your clients sizes on it ever again.

4.) Pantone- Stay in the know about the hottest colors while you are on the go. Pantone can help you build color libraries and share them with your clients too!

5.) Other stuff that is already on your iPhone- Okay that’s not an app but there are features on your iPhone that can really come in handy for a stylist.

- The calculator! Tally up your totals and re-stocking fees before you blow your budget.

- The weather! Dressing a client for an event? Check the weather first to see if they will need a coat or an umbrella to match that killer outfit.

- Your calendar! Book your appointments anywhere and know what day it is at all time. Seriously, as a stylist you tend to lose track of days, weeks, and months!!

- Your camera! On the fence about a garment? Snap a pic and send it to your client. Be careful though, some stores get a little freaked out by pictures.

SOS Loves Chelsea Market!

Although we’ve been to New York City multiple times, we still consider ourselves NYC rookies. Each time we go we try to discover cool new spots. New Yorkers are probably like, “Oh, that stank old place” but to us LA’ers, this stuff is new and cool. One of our favorite new-to-us discoveries was the Chelsea Market. Such a cool spot with neat things to look at, healthy places to eat, and of course some not so healthy places to eat.  We loved getting fresh juices at the little raw vegan joint for breakfast. We even went back to the market later that day where we had a nice organic lunch. Yippee!

Chelsea Market

Juices galore!!

Raw. Organic. Vegan … Three of our favorite words.

And more cookies

We’ll be back in NYC in July! Hope to see some of you there …
