Stylist Spotlight: Daria Hines

July 28th, 2011 Stylist Spotlight Tags:

Stylist, Daria Hines has styled some major celebrities including; Fergie, Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, Justin Beiber, Usher, Mary J. Blidge, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland … just to name a few! Today we are catching up with Daria to find out how she got her start as a celebrity stylist, what she looks for in an assistant stylist, the trends she loving (and not loving), and much more.

School Of Style: What made you want to become a stylist?

Daria Hines: I love shopping! Coming up with creative ideas to create looks for my clients that enhance their performances and make them feel good about themselves.

SOS: How long have you been styling?

DH: I have been on my own for 10 years

SOS: Who are some of the artists that you have worked with?

DH: Fergie, Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, Justin Beiber, Usher, Mary J. Blidge, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland … The list is long. LOL!

SOS: Who have been some of your favorite directors/photographers to work with?

DH: Jake Nava, Marc Webb, Chris Robinson, Fatima Robinson, and Melina Matsoukas

SOS: How did you get your start as a stylist?

DH: I was very blessed to assist Andrea Lieberman and she was very active in supporting me and recommending me for jobs, as well as recommending my agent Margaret take me on as a stylist. They both believed in me.

SOS: How long did you work as an assistant?

DH: 3.5 years

SOS: Where do you find inspiration for your work?

DH: Everywhere! Films, magazines, and young people in the street Europe and Japan.

SOS: What was your most memorable experience as a stylist?

DH: At an award show in one dressing room hearing Stevie Wonder practice in his dressing room next door and shooting Fergies album packaging with Ellen von Unwurth in Paris.

SOS: What is your favorite aspect of the job?

DH: Image development – meeting an artist for the first time and coming up with ideas for their style.

SOS: What was your most disastrous experience as a stylist?

DH: When I had to change Mary J into a new look for a show at House Of Blues and the top ripped. I had no back up option and she had to put her sweaty top back on!! I was horrified!! I expected to be fired the next day so I sent her flowers and begged for forgiveness. LOL!

SOS: What is you least favorite aspect of the job?

DH: The pressure of having to make a lot of people happy besides just the artist is very stressful, and having to make it look like a million bucks on a food stamp budget sometimes sucks!

SOS: What is your greatest accomplishment so far?

DH: The first time one of my videos won a video award and my artist thanked me☺

SOS: Do you have a signature style?

DH: If you mean my personal style? Or my work signature style? You would have to ask my agents about my signature style- they could probably describe it. I would like to believe I adapt to whats asked of me to produce. My personal style is always feminine with something street mixed in.

SOS: What is your favorite piece in your closet right now?

DH: I’m on a denim on denim moment so I’m revisiting all my denim. Its my vintage red Levis to the floor with a long train skirt.

SOS: What trends do you love right now?

DH: Jumpsuits, shorts, and color.

SOS: Any trends that you are completely over?

DH: Flower prints on everything and rhinestones on t-shirts.

SOS: Name your favorite shopping destinations?

DH: There are so many!! Barney’s, Opening Ceremony, Church, Diavolina, Creatures of Comfort, Maxfield, Dolce, Gucci, and Hermes.

SOS: What qualities do you look for in an assistant stylist or an intern?

DH: They have to be personable with my store and showroom contacts as they are representing me, and my relationships are very important. They have to keep me organized and they have to be proactive in sourcing out things. I like assistants that have their own style – I get inspired by them. They need to know they are there to make my life easier not more stressed.

SOS: What are your worst assistant pet peeves?

DH: Giving any opinions on the clothing during a fitting (when I have not asked) in front of my client. Hearing they were rude to anyone while working for me. Not getting something I sent them to get and not telling me about it in time for it to get fixed.

SOS: What’s your best advice for someone looking to get into wardrobe styling?

DH: Work for as many stylists as you can or at least 1 whose work you love.

SOS: Where can we see your work?

DH: MargaretMaldonado.com
